Music / Band PDF Print E-mail

The 1st semester of Music/Band in 5th grade is a reinforcement of the elements of music for students in the intermediate school.  They spend time learning music theory and learning to read music on soprano recorder so the transition to a band instrument is smooth and less complicated.  Students are tested and evaluated to see which instrument they would be the most successful playing and a choice is made.  The 2nd semester the students move to their chosen band instrument and learn fundamental playing concepts.  They perform at a Christmas Concert and Spring Concert in the 1st year. The 6th grade students continue on with learning how to play their instruments and learn new notes and techniques.  The 6th grade students march in the “Come and Take It” festivities. They also perform in a Christmas Concert, Spring Concert and various occasions determined by directors.

The 7th and 8th grade students may perform in the Apache Jr. High Band.  This band expands on knowledge they have learned and gives students a chance to try out for solo contest, region band, and possibly a concert contest.  These students march in “Come and Take It”, perform at pep rallies, Christmas Concert, Spring Concert and various occasions determined by directors.

As the band students enter high school they become part of the Apache Band, performing throughout the year representing Gonzales I.S.D. and the community throughout the Texas.  Incoming freshmen learn marching skills at a summer camp with the leadership of upperclassmen.  The Apache Band performs at varsity football games each Friday night in the fall along with high school pep rallies.   As part of the high school band the students will have a chance to try-out for region band, solo and ensemble, attend various marching and concert competitions.  The students will also perform at various community events throughout the year including a Christmas Concert and Spring Concert.   Being part the high school band takes on more responsibility as there are frequent times we represent the Gonzales community.  There are many scholarships available for band students throughout the state of Texas and being part of the Apache band will help students become eligible for these.

'We imagine a school in which students and teachers excitedly and joyfully stretch themselves to their limits in pursuit of projects built on their vision...not one that succeeds in making apathetic students satisfying minimal standards.'

S Papert
