In 2nd grade this year, we will be studying many different topics with the focus on "Changes."
During the 3rd six weeks, the students studied inventions. They researched inventions and their inventors and created an invention “quilt.” Also, using Greek and Latin root words and their meanings, the students named and designed a new “concoction” that would make the world a better place. They learned about how materials can be combined together to make a new product, such as how wood, clay, graphite, aluminum, etc. all go into making their pencils. The students also explored whether or not change should be forced in the name of progress and that all inventions have both positive and negative effects.
Finally, the students studied the concept of courage and how it is represented using symbolism in The Courage of Sarah Noble, as well as in other pieces of literature. They illustrated the use of the symbol of courage in the book, wrote about how it was important to the piece, and presented it to the class.

In 2nd grade this year, we will be studying many different topics with the focus on "Changes."
During the 2nd six weeks, the students have studied the advantages and disadvantages of using wood and plastic as production materials, with a focus on deforestation and the Great Pacific and Atlantic Garbage Patches. They also explored how technological change can be both good and bad for people and the planet.
Also, the students each designed a mask. They got into groups and wrote and performed a skit involving the characters portrayed by their masks. In addition, the students examined how architecture changes greatly depending on what geometric shapes are used. They redesigned the classroom using shapes other than rectangles and then designed a collage using geometric shapes.
Finally, the students studied how people can cause change in society. They researched the life of Cesar Chavez and created a timeline of his life. They also studied segregation and the Jim Crow laws through reading White Socks Only.

In 2nd grade this year, we will be studying many different topics with the focus on "Changes."
During the 1st six weeks, the students have studied how and where change occurs in the world around them, including in life cycles, the rock cycle, and the water cycle. They have studied meteorology and how the temperature, weather, etc. are constantly changing. The students made “forecast necklaces” using weather map symbols and water cycle “mobiles.” They also studied how the Earth’s climate can change over long periods of time and how the glaciers of the last ice age eroded the landscape of America into the familiar landforms we know today, such as the Great Lakes. In addition, the students explored how change affects living organisms as they grow and get older in The Grandpa Tree.
Finally, the students studied how human shelters have changed throughout history. They researched various types of human dwellings, made a poster of their dwelling, and presented it to the class.
