Superintendent's Message 6/30/2014

June 30, 2014

Dear Gonzales ISD School and Community Family,

Summer time marks an end to the past school year and the beginning of the next successful school year to come. Among many items of focus this year, one particular item related to school finance stands out from the others and will make GISD a participant in an upcoming election once again. Last November, we thanked our community as GISD was supported in passing a Schoolhouse Bond of $25 million dollars to provide for expansion, renovation and other district improvements. Within the next few months, we will have an important election related to Chapter 41. For the first time, GISD will be classified as a "property wealthy" school district under Chapter 41 of the Texas Education Code ("Chapter 41"). As described in more detail below, the practical result of this designation is that GISD is required to reduce or equalize wealth-per-student level to the state average in any year that it is classified as "property-wealthy" and a one-time election must be held to decide how some of our tax dollars will be sent away next year (commonly referred to as recapture).

Community Survey

Gonzales Independent School District wants to ensure that we are providing the best educational opportunities for our students and a collaborative and welcoming culture for our parents and community. To further the growth and improvement of the school district, we annually collect input from students, parents, staff and community on a range of topics including school quality and climate, effectiveness of communication, and development of positive relationships. STARS Performance Program

The Mighty Apache Band traveled to Universal Studios Orlando Resort in Florida to participate in the STARS Performance Program. The band performed the three pieces of music that they recently received a division one for in the UIL competition that led to their Sweepstakes Trophy. In addition to performing at Universal Studios, the band members enjoyed two days at Universal Studios parks, a visit to Cocoa Beach, and an entertaining night at Medieval Times Dinner Theatre. The band received a plaque for their participation in the STARS Program. The band is under the direction of Ramon Parker, Jerry Scoggin, and Dana Parker.
